A history of the bunker

Thirty years ago, you would drive past the secret bunker none the wiser. It would be the same today if it wasn’t for all the signs, old tanks and rockets at it now! That’s because on the surface, it is a normal looking farmhouse. It’s the sort of thing you see in movies. But when you enter, you’ll soon find yourself nearly 100 feet below ground . It was built in 1951 and remained operational until 1993. It is now a museum and everyone is welcome.

What to do at Scotland's Secret Bunker

The command centre is where you can find the radar rooms. These would make sure the skies over Scotland were safe from incursions during the Cold War. There’s also a broadcasting area. This is where, in the event of an attack, news and advice would be broadcast to the nation to keep everyone safe. There’s even a chapel, perhaps in case things got really bad…

With a cafe and shop, there’s also the chance to relax and enjoy some refreshments during your visit. The venue is open every day from the 1st February to the 31st October between 10am and 5pm. The cafe is open between 11.15am and 4pm.

Testimonials

We stayed in lodge 4 which was by far the best holiday accommodation we have ever stayed in, immaculate, spacious, so well equipped. The books, DVDs and board games were an extra touch and came in handy for some family time after exploring during the day. The surrounding area is beautiful and so many things to see and do nearby. West Sands beach is clean and beautiful and Bishop’s Wood and Craigtoun Country Park about a mile away are both worth a look. There are so many things we didn’t get chance to explore so I think we will be back. I think we will struggle to find any other accomodation as nice as this. Many thanks to Anne and the team.
