A Fife village with art at its heart

The vibrant art culture of the picturesque village of Pittenweem makes it a must-visit destination for hundreds of people each year. Alongside the annual arts festival, the village has plenty of historical cottages to admire, as well as beautiful views over the water. Not only that, but there is a mysterious cave to be explored, said to be where St Fillian lived as a hermit in the 7th century.

Arts festival

In the first week of every August, Pittenweem comes alive with art in every corner of it’s beautiful streets. It’s like no art festival you may have seen before. The galleries are homes, huts and garages. Art is celebrated everywhere, including on the streets. This arts festival enhances the beauty of the village, and allows visitors to buy and take a little bit of it home with them. Visit the art festival website to discover dates and which invited artists will be displaying some of their work this year.

St Fillian's Cave

Pittenweem has a secret – but it’s one everyone can enjoy. Tucked away in its streets is a cave which some say was where St Fillian lived in the 7th century. St. Fillian’s cave is a stunning example of a chamber carved by an underground river thousands of years ago through sandstone. Although it is dark inside, St. Fillian was said to be able to see thanks to a luminous left arm.

Pittenweem is still a working fishing village, with boats regularly landing a good catch. Further back from the three piers, the old houses, built hundreds of years ago, are still used to this day. Small, winding streets lead visitors on a tour of these buildings, many painted in bright and cheerful colours. Take a look at Kellie Lodge, a 16th century home where some say the Earls of Kellie once lived.

Testimonials

We stayed in lodge 4 which was by far the best holiday accommodation we have ever stayed in, immaculate, spacious, so well equipped. The books, DVDs and board games were an extra touch and came in handy for some family time after exploring during the day. The surrounding area is beautiful and so many things to see and do nearby. West Sands beach is clean and beautiful and Bishop’s Wood and Craigtoun Country Park about a mile away are both worth a look. There are so many things we didn’t get chance to explore so I think we will be back. I think we will struggle to find any other accomodation as nice as this. Many thanks to Anne and the team.
